Spelling, Grammar, Editing, and Writing Skills:
Since elementary school we have had spelling lists. In middle school we had 50 words we had to learn how to spell. If you don't know how to spell a word use spell check. Its not that hard.
Grammar is a necessary thing in writing, whether you are writing a research paper for school, a résumé for a new job, or writing a news story, you will need good grammar skills. This includes tenses, subject- verb agreement, parts of speech, and more.
Editing: editing your own work even before you send it to an editor is an important step of the process of print journalism. You would need to know how to edit your stuff and other's works, for you should know grammar to the point where you could also edit.
Writing Skills is a part that doesn't necessarily focus on the mechanics of writing, but rather the content. How does the content sound? Does my wording flow together well? Will my readers be able to understand my point or the facts I am printing? Those are all questions you need to ask yourself when reading through the rough draft, before making the final copy.
